The spacesuit worn by astronauts on the Apollo missions to the Moon was the A7L, a veritable ‘individual spacecraft’ that enabled them to survive and work in the vacuum and extreme conditions of the lunar surface. It provided pressure, oxygen, thermal regulation, and protection against abrasive regolith and micrometeorites.

The A7L consisted of numerous layers (approximately 14 to 17 depending on the section), combining rubberised nylon, aluminised Mylar, Dacron, Kapton film, Beta fabric and Teflon for thermal insulation and micrometeorite protection.

The suit included an inner thermal regulation garment with thin water tubes running through it, a pressurised layer and an outer shell to protect against regolith abrasion and heat.
