The Apollo 14 ‘lunar wheelbarrow’ (MET)
The MET (Modular Equipment Transporter) was a small two-wheeled cart, pulled by hand by the Apollo 14 astronauts to transport instruments, samples and equipment on the lunar surface.
The MET was nicknamed the ‘lunar wheelbarrow’ because of its shape and use, but it proved to be rather impractical on the uneven and dusty surface of the Moon.
The mixed experience with the wheelbarrow (MET) contributed to the decision to use a real motorised vehicle for subsequent missions: the Apollo Lunar Roving Vehicle (LRV), used from Apollo 15 onwards.
