In the Apollo spacecraft (the command module), the astronauts sat in three seats placed side by side, parallel to the bottom of the capsule's cone.
The astronauts were in a semi-reclining position (on their backs), which allowed them to better withstand the high accelerations experienced during take-off and atmospheric re-entry.
The living space in the Apollo command module was very small, only about 6 m³ for the three astronauts, which made the space around the seats very cramped.
